The senate has passed the Nigeria Police Trust Fund Bill, 2025, for second reading amid concerns over its constitutional implications and proposed funding structure.
The bill, sponsored by senate leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, seeks to repeal the 2019 act and create a stronger framework for funding and supporting the Nigeria Police Force.
Lawmakers said the proposed legislation is aimed at tackling poor funding, outdated equipment, weak infrastructure and welfare challenges as Nigeria battles rising insecurity, including insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and cybercrime.
